In a painting , if one can show the moment like bathing in the cool spring breeze is an enjoyment , and to be able to study under the guidance of the great master Yang Shan Shen of the Chun Fung Art Studio is definitely like bathing in the spring breeze. Being able to receive his gentle and outstanding lectures, but at the same time also captured by his strong and positive individuality, it should be a wonderful experience. All his art and technique , mixed in flesh and blood from his heart, would be strongly combined in master Yang’s teachings.
Liu Meng Kuan has started learning the art of painting with Master Yang Shan Shen in 1977, and from that year on, he has been following his master’s footsteps. Travelling and sketching, at the same time giving exhibitions in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and Malaysia, Taiwan ,Japan and Korea. He believes in master Yang’s art concepts – creation based on study from life. At the same time he studied traditional Chinese literature and Western art, to create new personal style from his heart.
Liu is considered one of the best students of master Yang’s, representing the third generation of the Lingnan school of painting. The founder Gao Jian Fu of the first generation has published a book of “ My personal view of the Modern Chinese Painting” which indicates: “ China has been influenced by Indian Art, the famous “Six Methods by Xie He is also possibly originated from the Six Rules of Painting of India Art”. Gao Jian Fu and Yang Shan Shen has dedicated all their lives in the revolution of modern Chinese painting , apart from carrying the old traditions, they have adapted influence from modern Japanese art ,in subject matter and techniques. The two great masters have successfully merged the ancient and modern Western art with the oriental culture. Especially master Yang in my own opinion, his art has exceeded the Lingnan school and has created an individual Yang Style. Liu Meng Kuan is also working towards the same direction. Apart from establishing the Mu Feng Art Studio to teach the art of painting, he has used his painting brush to explore the wonderful world of painting from nature. The birds and flowers appeared to be so peaceful and quiet. His application of ink and color create a livid and gentle feeling. The composition of his work is full of “zen” taste, leading the viewer into a world of peace. His colors are elegant, influenced by Western art. His lines are full of texture and charm. Flowers, birds and bees appeared in his paintings with sound and life.
While watching his work I felt I have discovered a feeling of modernism. I consider this represent creativeness, in terms of technique, construction and subject theme .His new trials create an individual new look , exactly reflect the teachings of master Yang - art must possess individuality.
Thinking back, master Yang has been exhibiting his paintings in Singapore and Malaysia since the 40’s, spreading the seeds of the art of the Lingnan school.
To-day our country possesses a multi varieties of Chinese art , are really benefited from the pioneer artists from the past. It is wonderful that Liu Meng Kuan has followed his teacher’s footsteps and come to Malaysia to exhibit his work, to add colors to our art circle.
As he said: “ I would like to create a bit of resonance, a bit of warmth , a bit of memory, to the viewer of my work…..”. What a wonderful thing is that an artist can express his intentions and faith in his work.
I wish him every success in his exhibition in Malaysia.
